Here’s one I just pulled outta my, uh, rear pocket. What say Smoke stays with Chevy and boogies on over to Richard Childress to wheel his ‘someday’ fourth team. Depot would have to choose sides--Smoke or JGR. Home Depot’s main competitor is Lowes, not Chivvy or Toy. And with Lowes hangin’ around the top of the points, my money’s on Depot wanting to stay in shootin’ range. Remember, the champ score is Home Depot two and Lowes one so far. And don’t forget, Smoke has put Depot on the map--good, bad and all. So I say, ‘Whatcha Gonna Do, Smoke?’
Oh yeah, all of this is happening as Toyota is busy putting a lap on Chevy/GM in world sales. Hmmm.
As long as we’re talking hardware…What is NASCAR going to do to incorporate their highly successful Car Of Tomorrow into the NASCAR Bush (or whatever the series name will be in ‘08) Series (NBS) cars? The COT was and still is right on so what will the NBS end up with? This change won’t fly next year; NASCAR’s just looking on down the road.
We’ve heard reports saying NASCAR was thinking about using Mustangs and Camaros for the series. Now that could be a fellow media puke’s speculation or it could be NASCAR throwing it up in the air and saying, ‘Pull’ to see if it’s shot down. Running Pony cars could keep the NBS from looking like an inbred stepchild of Cup and generate a totally new class. That could be cool in the long run as the cars would eventually trickle down to the local tracks making their racing safer. Short track car builders could buy into the program and maybe short track racing would move a little closer to running similar cars like they will need for their own survival.
The other big ‘ol deal is that Detroit will be trying to sell us Muscle Cars again in 2008/9. And we hear they could be SUPER Muscle Cars with big ass motors. With Camaros and Challengers coming back, I’m sure Toyota could whip up a body that would fit NASCAR’s platform and join the fun. I’ll bet Detroit would Cowboy up on that deal and run with it.
And while we’re at it, what will NASCAR do to put their COT program in the Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS)? Both the NBS and NCTS deserve the benefits of the COT. But they need to have a more economical ease-in for any new hardware as costs there are not so easily absorbed. Wholesale fleet replacement could flat out kill some teams. So, I say, ‘Whatcha Gonna Do, NASCAR?’
Gentlemen, start your hot dogs! Those wacky folks at Lowe's Motor Speedway have come up with another ‘first.’ Good ‘ol Humpy introduced the track's new ‘All-You-Can-Eat Grandstand.’ Yep, fans can now pig out at the “Beast of the Southeast’ without forking (?) over extra bucks. It works like this: Their ‘A-Y-C-E Grandstand’ has the usual track food concession stands that are open one hour prior to the start of the Bank of America 500 and for two hours after the green is dropped. So-inclined fans can buy a special wristband (will it expand?) and snarf away. No word if any extra bathrooms will be added to that section. Check ‘em out at 1-800-455-FANS or www.lowesmotorspeedway.com.
