ANOTHER CONVERT

I just found your online magazine. I think it's great, do you think you will produce an actual magazine version of this for the newsstands? Because I have spent more than a couple of hours in front of the computer and I would love to be able to sit on the couch reading without having to print it all out.

Gary, this is an actual magazine... An online magazine. You won’t find us at a newsstand or gas station convenience store, but you WILL find us free. Surely that counts. Regardless, glad you like it, and we hope you’ll keep reading us.

FLATTERY WILL GET YOU EVERYWHERE

Looks good, keep up the good work. Don’t be afraid to tell your pals about us, either.

A PLEA FOR HELP

I have a 1999 GMC Denali 4x4 with a 5.7-liter. I was going to swap my motor out for the HT383e stroker until I read your article and found out how many ponies I would be losing. I was wondering if I could get some direction on choosing a head and cam combo and also some internals to achieve more ponies than I would with the 383. I’m not that knowledgeable with motors but I can turn a wrench pretty good. Also where can I get the specs on my motor? Thank you and keep up the good work. Go Chevy, bowtie for life.

Omar,
If your Denali is a ’99 model, it is equipped with an LQ4 6.0L LS-type engine, not the old 350ci small-block.  In stock trim, it produces 300hp at 4,800 and 355 lb-ft at 4000rpm. To get a good look at what you have and what you can do to make it perform better, go to a good bookstore and pick up a copy of  “How to Build High-Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8s” by Will Handzel (CarTech, Inc 39966 Grand Ave., North Branch, MN 55056, www.cartechbooks.com).

To preview what’s in store, we built a stock short-block 5.3L LM4 in our ’03 Silverado by adding Crane Gold Series rocker arms, Crane hydraulic camshaft, AFR 205 cylinder heads, Bassani shorties, Magnaflow  Hi-Flow cats, and a Corsa cat-back. That combo put 380hp at the wheels. Adding a Magnuson intercooled supercharger bumped the figure to 480. Whatever you do, you can get away with it on the stock short block, depending on the mileage. If you’re uncertain, freshen up the entire assembly before you make any serious modifications. Hope this helps.
