Super Chevy Show at Moroso
The Super Chevy Show rolled in to Moroso Motorsports Park for the first time in 14 years. New this time around were the Nitro Coupes, which put on a pretty good show for the fans. Saturday qualifying saw newcomer Ken Walsh rip off a fine 6.37/224.88 for the number one spot. Dan Bandish was second almost a tenth behind at 6.46/224.55. Russ Crump was third at 6.73/205.88. Wesley Jones was fourth with a 6.79/201.25. Jim Wiens was fifth with a 6.96/209 effort in Wayne Torkelson’s '53 Vette that he has been driving since the Indy SCS after the crash in Atlanta. Local racer Doug Horween rounded out the field with a 7.00/204 in his '68 Camaro. The field was short a couple of cars after newly crowned champ Cody Barklage suffered a trailer fire just west of Pensacola, Florida on the way to Moroso. A faulty wheel bearing was to blame. Zach’s '57 Chevy was seriously damaged, and the team returned to their shop for repairs.
Jim Wiens loses it at Moroso about 300 feet out.
Round one started off with a bang as Dan Bandish shot to a winning 6.45/224 to stop Jim Wiens, who was in deep trouble after he smoked the tires a few hundred feet in the left lane, turned left, and slammed the guardwall hard, sending him back across the track and into the right wall. After a few tense seconds, he climbed out, unhurt. The second pair saw Russ Crump stop Wesley Jones with a 7.10/205.19 as Jones also smoked the tires and slowed to an 8.90. Doug Horween gambled and took a shot at the tree going up against number one Ken Walsh and drew a red light.
