Chevys Dominate at Fontana PSCA Meet

The PSCA California Nationals at the AAA Auto Club Dragway at California Speedway were a bit more emotional this year. Former track manager Dave Danish died only a short time after resigning from the track and this was the first event for new manager Jim Partridge. It looks like the track is in good hands.
Chevrolet was well represented as nine of the 14 class winners were wearing Bowties.

John Scialpi made only one qualifying run in his ’57 Chevy Bel Air (seen at top against Bob Griffith’s Viper) and got into the Pro Street field. He met No. 1 qualifier Ed Thornton, also in a ’57 Chevy, in the final round. Scialpi got out first with a .044 holeshot and his 6.551 at 209.98 mph held off Thornton’s top end charge of 6.630/217.18. Thornton, 2006 champ, set Low E.T. and Top Speed at 6.520 and 227.57 mph.
Rich Zehring won the Outlaw Street class in his Mel Cotton Sports nitrous-injected 1970 Chevy Nova over Ron Weems, when Weems shut off his ’05 Grand Am. Weems had earlier reset his Outlaw Street Speed Record at 205.16 mph.
