KIRK’S CAMARO QUICKEST TEN-WIDE

Steve Kirk’s 3,015-lb Outlaw 10.5W, 2000 Camaro powered by a naturally aspirated and nitrous-injected 762-inch Gene Fulton-built big block Chevy ran the two quickest and fastest elapsed times and speeds in history at the American Drag Racing League’s Sept. 15-16 Dragstock III at Rockingham Dragway. Kirk recorded eighth-mile times of 4.430 and 4.463 and twice ran speeds over 166 mph to set both ends of the record for ten-wide cars at 4.430/166.74. (Bret Kepner photo) [9/22/2006]
CHILDRESS RACING SIGNS PETERS FOR ’07
Timothy Peters, 26, of Providence, N.C., has raced the past two seasons in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series for Bobby Hamilton Racing and Dodge, but in 2007 he'll be racing in the NASCAR Busch Series (NBS) for Richard Childress Racing and Chevrolet. Childress is noted for his keen eye in spotting future talent and Peters will be joining a revitalized RCR team, which has the very real possibility of winning the NBS and Nextel Cup with driver Kevin Harvick this year.
Peters has come up through the Southeastern Late Model wars -- he was the ‘04 Late Model champion at tough South Boston (VA) Speedway and earned consecutive Late
Model championships the previous two seasons (2002-03) at Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, NC. He also earned 10 World Karting Association national championships in a driving career that began at age seven.
“Richard Childress Racing is an organization that has been on its game for a long time and knows how to win championships,” said Peters. “I have confidence in myself with the opportunity Richard has given me to showcase my talents. I know it’s going to be tougher than what I’m used to but I adapt pretty well to new challenges and will enjoy getting in there and learning a few things. All it’s going to do is make me a better driver.”
A determination is forthcoming as to which of RCR’s Busch teams he will drive for. RCR is also scheduled to field a car for Peters in the Oct. 7 ARCA race at Talladega (AL) Superspeedway.
“We see a lot of potential in Timothy and look forward to giving him the opportunity to showcase his talents in the NASCAR Busch Series, said Richard Childress, president and CEO of RCR. “We’ll get him in an ARCA car at Talladega to get his feet wet and get a head start on next season.”
Peters joins one of the storied stock car racing teams: 130-plus victories and nine NASCAR championships, including six in the NEXTEL Cup Series with the legendary Dale Earnhardt. It was the first organization to win championships in the NEXTEL Cup Series, Busch Series and Truck Series. [9/22/2006]
