JOHNSON ROMPS AT MARTINSVILLE

Jimmie Johnson looks very tough in 2007 to repeat as Cup Champ if his Chevy Impala SS COT performance here was any indication. In an otherwise basically boring race at the great shortrack, Johnson held off his mentor/teammate Jeff Gordon for the last ten laps to take the win by ½-car length. It was a display of restraint and car control seldom seen on a
short track as the two bumped a bit in the remaining laps, but never in the time-honored “I just wanted to rattle his cage” version of the late Dale Earnhardt – which would have put Johnson’s lead car in at least one 360-degree revolution.
Chevys filled the top seven places in the finishing order with these drivers in third through seventh: Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Burton and Tony Stewart. The COT is still having some expected teething problems: Kevin Harvick must have thought he was hexed – the fuel pump drive cable broke (taking him out of the Top 10 for lengthy repairs), and then the energy-absorbing foam in the right-side door started smoking.
“Smoke just started coming out the right side door, so I guess blaming it on something else (referencing the energy absorbing foam in the doors) is not the right thing to do. I mean this thing just started burning up, so it's almost turning it into a joke now," noted Harvick. His is not the first complaint about smoking foam/fumes from the new COT.
In Cup the strong multicar teams just keep getting stronger. Chevy more than most. (GM Racing photo)[4/5/2007]
