First things first.  The 1/2-inch to 1-inch of the inner wheel tub where it meets the frame is actually a sheetmetal lip.  At various spots, that lip tends to flare out to meet the outside of the frame rail.  Deter (one of the owners of Lejeune) did a little bit of hammer work to get it in shape.

Deter cut the frame with a 4.5-inch angle grinder with a cut-off disc for this part of the surgery.  He trimmed the rail back just beyond the factory seam.
