A straight-edge across the frame illustrates that the height is identical side-to-side. Alignment with the frame is most important for flow as well as for cosmetic appearance. V-band clamps are the best for a perfect no-leak seal and all major exhaust tubing suppliers carry them. They are composed of two main parts. Here are the sealing rings that will be welded to the ends of the header flange and tubing, or mufflers to tubing, etc. You can put them wherever you deem it necessary to have a separate section in the exhaust to remove it if need be. The band clamp then tightens the sealing rings together. As the bolt is tightened, the grooves automatically pull the matching machined halves together for a leak-proof seal!
As shown, the seal rings must fit right against each other when the tubes or mufflers are mated. Be sure of this before tack welding them to your tubes. The clamps are strong so if you have a gap in the system they will pull the exhaust together--which can alter the system’s fit to the hangers and frame components.
With the exhaust tubing, we begin by adding 45-degree bends to the X- pipe. To get the gaps just right, we’ll mark for fit and then trim the pipes. You will also need some 90- and 45-degrees, and straight sections, etc.
A string running from one end of the car to the other acts like a carpenter’s plumb line to keep us on track throughout the system build.
We use various jigs such as this tubing jack stand which can be adjusted in tiny increments to get everything aligned before tack welding the tubes in place.
