How about the engine? It did require a little “freshen-up”

We had the engine disassembled and checked out at a local race engine shop, AEM (Automotive Engine & Machine) in Waterloo, Iowa. The pistons looked pretty bad, as did the cylinder walls and bearings. Appears I just ran it way too rich and the extra alcohol in the crankcase was corroding parts and hurting lubrication.

I trusted the machine work and reassembly to a local high performance engine shop and the assembly to a friend who has built and driven just about every possible type of drag car on the planet. Pete Williams did the assembly at AEM. Owned by Curt Wollan, AEM has produced some of the fastest and most reliable late-model stock car engines in the Midwest over the past couple decades. Curt’s experience on the dyno was a welcome addition when we got everything ready to go.

When it was time to make a few pulls on the dyno I was a little unprepared, to say the least. I had some four-hole spacers I wanted to try and a 1” open spacer. Before I got there they had the four-hole spacers on and the open spacer below them. That was cool, but after they were done we found out I had sent them spacers with only a 2” hole and the carburetor has a 2.250 throttle bore. Oops, my bad! Probably hurt us a little bit but you have to use what you have and the engine still made 966 H.P. at 6800 RPM and made 860 ft/lbs of torque at 5300 RPM.

We only got four pulls (I get real nervous hearing and watching my engines go through “dyno pulls”) and I took it home.

Check in next month and I will have a box of time slips to go over and some more info on the Aeromotive fuel system, how the Quick Fuel carburetor performed at the track, procedures in getting the throttle stop setup for consistency and probably a few “race stories.”
